
Mr. Ashor Nick Sarupen has served as Deputy Minister of Finance since 3 July 2024, supporting the Minister of Finance in driving South Africa’s fiscal and economic policy leadership. In this role, he brings a unique blend of youthful energy and strategic insight to the National Treasury.
Currently, he also holds the position of Deputy Chairperson of the Democratic Alliance (DA) Federal Council, reflecting his continued influence within his party and national policy-making.
Deputy Minister Ashor Sarupen’s Academic credentials and early career
Mr. Sarupen earned a Bachelor of Science degree, an Honours degree (BSc Hons), and an MBA from the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits), followed by an MPhil in Corporate Strategy from the Gordon Institute of Business Science (GIBS). His MBA focused on business models for the Internet of Things, while his MPhil thesis examined the impact of anti-globalization on the South African economy.
Mr. Sarupen’s career in public service began at a young age, joining the DA at 17, and moving quickly into leadership roles such as Chief Whip in the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Council by age 22. He later served in the Gauteng Provincial Legislature (2014–2019) and ascended to the positions of Chief of Staff and Parliamentary Counsellor to the Federal Council Chairperson.
In 2019, he was appointed Chief of Staff to DA Federal Council Chairperson Helen Zille, became her Parliamentary Counsellor, and in 2020 was elected as Deputy Chairperson of the DA Federal Council. His leadership helped shape the party’s strategic direction during the 2021 local government elections.
Parliamentary leadership and fiscal oversight
Since 2019, Mr. Sarupen has served as a Member of Parliament, sitting on the Standing Committee on Appropriations and the Standing Committee on Finance, where he has provided robust analysis and oversight on national budgeting and fiscal allocations.
His career trajectory illustrates a pattern of relentless oversight, proactive leadership, and the courage to push for reforms even when politically difficult.
